With a change in the weather, the lineup of winter activities for Presidents’ Week and beyond will fill everyone’s vacation. The staff at Whiteface Mountain, in Wilmington, is gearing up for what’s expected to be a busy Presidents’ Holiday week, including skiing and riding at the Olympic mountain. More than 75% of the resort’s trails are open and over the last 48 hours, Mother Nature has brought New York State’s fifth highest peak more than five inches of natural snow.

Winter arrives in Lake Placid


Winter finally arrived but it took longer than necessary.

We were actually wondering for a while. In mid December, hotel management took matters into its own hands and made its own winter by purchasing snow guns and blasting a surface suitable for sledding. See previous winter blog.

But then, the mercury hit 62 degrees on December 24 and as avid golfers took divots, tourism officials in and around Lake Placid created winter when there was none…….until the day after Christmas, that is.
