Family getaway including the NCAA hockey championships Mar. 15-16
The NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Championships return to the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid this weekend as four talented schools will skate this weekend with a national championship at stake.
On March 15 at 4:00, Norwich University tangles with Oswego State University, while the 7:30 contest features Utica College against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The two winners meet for the Division III national crown on Saturday, March 16, at 7 PM.
All games will be played on the same surface where the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team defeated Russia in the Miracle on Ice on its way to a gold medal.
Fans from the four schools, including alumni, families and other supporters, can take advantage of an extraordinary family vacation or couples getaway this weekend by combining the hockey action with the myriad of Lake Placid activities.
By day you can ski and snowboard at nearby Whiteface Mountain, or ride the mountain's Cloudsplitter Gondola for unparalleled views of the Adirondack Mountain; go cross country skiing and snow shoeing at Mt. Van Hoevenberg; skating on the Olympic Oval on Main Street; visit the towering ski jumps and learn about Lake Placid's Olympic legacy in the museum at the Herb Brooks Arena.
Most of these activities can be packaged through the attractive Olympic sites passport for just $32 per person. The passport is a great keepsake of your visit to Lake Placid.
As the day winds down, the pulse of championship hockey, known as the Frozen Four, picks up with evening action.
Norwich and Oswego are no strangers to our village, having played in this event numerous times. The former advanced by taking out Babson in the quarterfinals, while Oswego eliminated Adrian College.
For Norwich, this will be their 11th trip to the Frozen Four in the past 17 years, while 2013 marks Oswego State's fourth straight trip to the semi-finals.
Utica College defeated Bowdoin in the previous round. The winners led the nation this season in home attendance, with an average of nearly 3,500 per game. We hope to see many of them in Lake Placid. Wisconsin-Eau Claire eliminated the two-time defending national champions, St. Norbert College, last weekend.
Game tickets are available by calling the Olympic Center Box Office at 518-523-3330. Early arrivals at the arena will receive promotional treats.
