Lake Placid activities, spurred by great weather, come to life
The transition month of April is over, and May weather thus far has been uber-incredible. The past 2 weeks have seen the mercury climb steadily through the 60s and into the 70s.
Town and village crews have completed their clean-up duties. We have seen people swimming in Mirror Lake; boating on Lake Placid lake; sunbathing at the public beach; playing tennis and golf; walking our quaint Adirondack village and entering our High Peaks for hiking.
The Whiteface Mountain Memorial Highway, taking you to the top of New York's fifth highest peak, will open for the season on May 17. That's in time for our many Canadian friends who visit us for Victoria Day weekend.
On June 14, the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center will re-open with mountain biking, guided touring, and the spectacular Cloudsplitter Gondola ride to the top of Little Whiteface.
Summer bobsled rides, on the 1932 and 1980 Olympic track, get underway May 18 at Mount Van Hoevenberg. A few weeks later, mountain biking at that venue will begin for the summer and fall seasons.
Given the fact that we are just nine months away from the next Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, the Olympic sites in Lake Placid take on added significance. Many Olympians spend their summer here training at an official U.S. Olympic Training Center. You could easily stumble into several of them around town.
For instance, Mirror Lake Inn's Andrew Weibrecht, son of owners Ed and Lisa Weibrecht, skied to a 2010 Olympic bronze medal. Andrew will train here this summer with intentions of returning to the podium.
Vancouver Olympic gold medal bobsled driver, Steve Holcomb, will train here during the off-season, as does the entire U.S. Luge Team. And 2010 Olympic gold medalist in mogul skiing, Hannah Kearney, will work on some new tricks in our 750,000 gallon pool. Hannah is also known to spend time working on her golf game in Lake Placid.
So now you get the idea: this is a pretty special place for athletic achievement. We often say that the road to the Olympics runs through Lake Placid - literally!
While this comes under the category of work for world class athletes, sometimes they do unwind, and one of their favorite spots to do so is our Cottage Cafe, where we synch up great pub fare with tall, cold beverages, served inside and out.
We expect to see a lot of that on May 24 when The Cottage celebrates its 37th birthday. It's an open party, and you're invited.
In the meantime, with Mother's Day approaching this Sunday (May 12), we wish all moms a wonderful day and remind you that Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa is offering a brunch buffet to mark a special occasion.
