Mirror Lake Inn rings in a summer full of Lake Placid activities
We have enjoyed our first two holidays of the summer (Victoria Day and Memorial Day) and have now turned the calendar into June. The month, marked by grade school and high school graduations, gives us reason to talk about Lake Placid activities in our beautiful region of Northern New York.
The first international event is set for Sunday, June 9, when the Lake Placid Marathon and Half Marathon bring several thousand runners to the start line. The mass start routes the competitors up Main Street, which is closed to vehicular traffic for this competition.
On June 15, the Great Adirondack Trail Run commences in Keene Valley and directs runners onto several of our High Peaks.
The Wilmington/Whiteface Bike Fest, highlighted by a 100 kilometer (62 mile) mountain bike romp through the Olympic region, is set for June 14-16. The 100 K event concludes with a grueling climb at the Whiteface Mountain Ski Center.
With the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia only eight months away, the Olympic theme comes to life when USA Hockey sends their women's national team to the famed Lake Placid Olympic Center for a training camp and series of games. The 10-day stint, set for June 16-26, takes place in the 1980 Herb Brooks Arena, and begins the lengthy Olympic team nomination
As the country's best women's hockey players depart, top figure skating talent will occupy the Olympic Center when the Lake Placid Summer Figure Skating Championships take the ice June 27-30.
As we catch our breath from all of this, it's time to relax and watch approximately 1,000 four-legged athletes as the annual Lake Placid and I Love NY Horse Shows return for their annual two-week stint in the Olympic village. Mark the dates of June 25-July 7.
Spectators will see the best on the international show jumping circuit competing for prize money. This much-anticipated equestrian meet has been a fixture in Lake Placid since 1974 (photo on right).
In the midst of this, you can also partake in the 8th annual I Love BBQ and Music Festival (photo below) held on the 1980 Olympic Speed Skating Oval, July 4-6. Eating, BBQ competition between iconic teams such as the Bastey Boys (featured on TNT's BBQ Pitmasters), the junior world championships, BMX bike exhibitions, kids play areas, mechanical bull riding for the public and some of the top local and regional bands make this a memorable non-alcoholic event as it benefits Lake Placid's Shipman Youth Center.
The yearly Lake Placid Summer Ski Jump, date to be determined in early July, occurs on the artificial 90 meter jumping surface at complex on Route 73 just outside Lake Placid. Patrons are amazed that these athletes soar as far in summer as they do in winter.
This is only part of our summer story. In future weeks, there will be more to come as we will take the schedule into late summer. You will find Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa located conveniently in the midst of it all, overlooking Mirror Lake in Lake Placid.
Additionally there are several free programs in place each week during July and August in our village park on Main Street. The Songs at Mirror Lake series on Tuesday nights presents different genres of music, while each Wednesday evening, the Lake Placid Sinfonietta (last image) offers up the best of pops.
Just bring your blanket or chair, some food and drink, and enjoy the entertainment in a lakeside setting adjacent to Mirror Lake. Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa is just a five minute walk to this picturesque venue.
We'll conclude for now, but in the meantime, we would be happy to keep you posted on all of our Adirondack area events. Just fill in the box at the top right of this page, and we'll take care of the rest.
Many thanks for visiting. Please return to see what's on the event menu in July and August, and for other news of interest.
